Any particular reason for the Sealed price bump? It's a small one, but still, just curious.

Events used to be $35 before I was the boss. I kept it at $30 for as long as I could.
I actually reduced it to $30 based on the strong Cdn$, but the Government wants their share of your money and the HST applies to Magic Tournaments now, which is a straight $2 on top I have to pay back to Gov't.
I could easily justify a $30 price tag with a stronger Cdn$ (0.975), but HST is a kick in the pants. I actually made a mistake for M11 (HST had kicked in way after price was advertised) and the HST is a cost that I just had to absorb.
It's not just the straight up 5% on top of the entry fee, everything else I buy costs 5% more (pens, printer paper, toner, product) so it's almost a double hit of HST for business owners.
I did make second flights $25, so it's the same price as old times ($35+25 or $30+30) if you do multiple events. If your second event is 2HG/Trios but you played in a flight I'll find some sort of discount for rewarding you for a second event.

That's not how HST works MacPhee, you should be only remitting the difference between what you collect and what you pay in HST. so nothing you buy "costs 5% more" in fact, typically your costs should already have had PST, so you should actually be able to lower the event cost, but then add HST on to it.
The cards were always subject to both PST and GST. The HST is simply a more efficient way to collect that.
The only things that "cost more" are things that are now subject to HST that didn't have PST before. Eating out, roofers, realtors etc.
Perhaps this applies to magic tournaments themselves, but I don't buy that it applies to everything below you, and you should now be saving on those components.

I had to do a HST presentation at work today, so I'm getting a kick ...
I don't know how MacPhee operates, but one cannot claim back HST without having a HST number and being registered. If Daddy Mac simply does this on his own dime, then he's not going to be able to claim the tax, much the same as any individual.
Also, businesses still have to pay the HST up front. Yes, most of them (restaurants and food places, especially) should be passing costs savings on, but the money still has to go out first before it comes back in.
That and MacPhee's prices are hardly high.

It applies to the hall he is renting.

Yes, product costs and most supplies always had taxes that were PST+GST.
I do have a registered business and I do need to collect and remit tax on behalf of the government (My favorite time, let me tell you. Pure joy).
As Jordan points out, anything that is service related (hall rental) is a flat 5% increase. The cost of the hall is a major portion of the costs to run an event, so while it's not a 5% increase across the board, it is significant. Even more maddening is the fact that little things like photocopies are also subject to HST (hey, it's a service). Costs vary by region; renting a hall will have differing costs by area. Renting space in Vancouver is bloody expensive, but still not as bad as East Coast. Edmonton < Vancouver < Montreal < ... < Japan.
I've heard a lot of people bash poor Marvin (Ontario) for $40 events, but halls cost money to rent, and they cost significantly more for him. It's as simple as that.
Magic tournaments are now a good or service affected by the HST and subject to the 'additional' parts of HST - like the restaurants that always had some tax but now they have both, so that is a straight up additional 5% that I collect and remit. I was just absorbing the cost of the PST before (7%) and working it into the price, but HST caused me to reexamine the whole cost/supply/expenses with more scrutiny.
While it's not a direct correlation to HST, the HST was the catalyst that spurred me to examine costs & taxes more closely and make necessary a small increase. I'd rather not, but I can minimize the impact is by making a second event $25, so it's still the same as 30+30. Best I could do.
